SYNOPSIS
I'm Still Here (2024)
Walter Salles’ powerful political drama I’m Still Here tells the true story of Eunice Paiva, a Brazilian mother whose life is shattered when her husband, dissident politician Rubens Paiva, is forcibly disappeared during the country’s military dictatorship. Played with extraordinary depth by Fernanda Torres—and later, by Fernanda Montenegro—Eunice transforms her grief into a decades-long fight for truth, justice, and memory, all while raising five children in the shadow of state violence.
Spanning from the early 1970s to the 2010s, the film follows Eunice through imprisonment, trauma, and displacement, as she battles misinformation and government silence. Her relentless pursuit of answers exposes the brutality of the regime and highlights the resilience of families left behind. As Brazil transitions back to democracy, Eunice emerges as a formidable advocate for human rights, culminating in her receiving her husband’s official death certificate 25 years after his disappearance.
Acclaimed worldwide and winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, I’m Still Here is both an intimate portrait of a woman’s courage and a sweeping reflection on a nation reckoning with its past. Driven by a career-best performance from Torres, it stands as one of the most important and moving films of recent years.
